Winter weather in the local area can be brutal enough to cause roofs to sag due to the weight of snow. When it melts, other areas of your home are in danger of getting damaged due to moisture exposure. Even your windows won’t be spared—below-zero temperatures can cause them to freeze shut. Fortunately, there are a few ways to prevent this from happening at this time of year. Window and roofing service provider Window World of Boston shares the following tips:
Minimize indoor humidity. Reducing your home’s indoor humidity levels is one way to lessen the chances of your windows freezing shut during the winter. Maintain consistent temperatures around your house, especially moisture-prone areas like the kitchen and bathroom. Turn on exhaust fans when cooking food or taking showers. Open the windows for a few minutes every day to release stale air. Any of these actions can limit water droplets forming on the surfaces of your windows.
Use a de-icing product. Before your windows become cold enough to freeze shut, window and siding replacement contractors recommend using a de-icing spray. Remember that you need to re-apply it to each window’s surface within 24 hours because the initial spray doesn’t last quite as long. Read the instructions on the back label to achieve the best results.
Apply weatherstripping and caulk. Do you feel the cold coming through your closed windows? If so, there could be gaps and cracks that are allowing winter air to enter your living spaces and wreak havoc on your indoor climate. Consider applying new weatherstripping and caulk to keep air from leaking in and causing your windows to freeze during the winter.
