Double-hung windows are revered for their classic style, energy efficiency, and ease of maintenance. However, they can and do get dirty inside and out. A build-up of dirt can leave your windows looking filthy and expose you to particulates and allergens. The two-sash design helps make cleaning easier, although cleaning your windows isn’t always so simple.
Preparing to Clean Double-Hung Windows
Start by cleaning the interior glass first. Remove interior grilles by lifting them away from the glass towards the edge of the frame. Don’t remove the grille clips. Then clean the windows normally using a window cleaning solution or water, and a soft cloth.
To thoroughly clean your windows, follow these simple steps first:
- Remove the screens
- Unlock the lower sash
- Raise the lower sash 2-3 inches
- Keep the lower sash supported
- Wipe or vacuum the bottom sill clean
Some windows don’t have tilt latches. If your window has a jamb-liner, push the frame towards the wall and pull on the sash from the upper corner, starting on the right side and then the left.
When cleaning the exterior glass, start with the lower sash. First, you’ll need to unlock the window and lift it about two inches, and then slide the wash assist tabs so they’re between the sash and the window frame. With both hands, grip the lower sash and pull it towards you. It should tilt inwards. Be sure to support the sash with a chair or other object and not tilt it past a 90-degree angle. Once the bottom sash is open, lower the upper sash by first sliding the wash assist tabs back to the top. Now you can lower the upper sash until the wash tabs are reachable. The upper and lower sash should be separated by a space of at least one inch. Move the wash assist tabs inward while moving the upper sash in your direction, until it rests on the lower sash.
Cleaning Window Glass and Frame
Cleaning the window is generally simple. The exterior glass can be cleaned with plain water. You may not need anything else. If dirt and grime are hard to remove, you can mix in some vinegar. The general rule is to use 2-3 tablespoons of vinegar for every gallon of water.
For the frame and jamb-liner, water and a mild detergent will do, using a squeegee if you prefer. Dry your windows with a paper towel or lint-free cloth. Once you are finished cleaning the upper sash, return it to its original position, making sure to push it down to engage the sash balance. Move on to the exterior glass of the lower sash, cleaning it the same way. When you’re finished, lift the upper sash about an inch and rotate until it clicks. Push the sash into position while pushing the tilt latches as necessary. You can now lift the lower sash until it snaps into its vertical position; then push it into place. Interior grilles removed at the beginning of the process can now be pressed into the grille clips and secured.
