Guide to Basement Hopper Windows

At Window World of Boston, we offer many options, which now include basement hopper windows. A hopper window is small, often used for bathroom or basement window installation, and tilts downward and inward. When the glass pane is open, the window provides ventilation in tight spaces.

Hopper windows are typically less expensive than sliding windows, which move from side to side. They differ from awning windows in that the top of the sash swings inward from the wall when opened, rather than the bottom of the sash swinging outward. While a slider or double-hung window opens just half-way, a hopper window opens completely, making it ideal for small, confined spaces.

Hopper windows have been used since the 19th century, when they were known as transom hopper windows. Popular in Victorian homes, they’re now used regularly for any type of home with compact spaces.

Where Do I Install a Hopper Window?

Hopper windows are ideal for where there’s minimal wall space. Aside from bathrooms and basements, they’re also suited for use along driveways or paths near your home. They are similar to basement windows with dryer vents built in. The ventilation provided helps improve indoor air quality, while ample natural light can enter a tight space to make it as functional as possible.

Are Hopper Windows Safe?

A hopper is a safe replacement window option because it’s too small to climb in and out of. A burglar can’t simply crawl through it to enter your home as they can with larger windows. Hopper windows are, therefore, ideal for areas of your home you don’t normally spend time monitoring.

Other Benefits of Hopper Windows

  • Insulation: A tight seal with the window frame, when the sash is closed, means cold air is kept out of your home in the winter and cooled air doesn’t escape in the summer.
  • Reduced humidity: Humidity can be a problem in basements and bathrooms, leaving areas moist and prone to mold. A hopper window can let steam from a shower escape and musty odors in a basement out.
  • Customization: Frames are available in many colors, inside and out, and with different types of woodgrains for interior design. Hopper windows are also available with energy-efficient glass options, including Low-E coatings, dual- and triple-glazing, and argon gas fillings.

Are There Any Disadvantages?

Hopper windows are not effective at keeping the rain out when they’re open. It’s also difficult to cover them with blinds and shades, so there may be limited privacy or options for using window treatments. Another downside is they don’t provide a means of escape during an emergency, such as a fire.
