Festive Holiday Window Decorating Ideas

The holidays are here and it’s time to decorate your home. Decorating your porch and exterior with Christmas lights or setting up a Christmas tree in your living room aren’t the only ways to make your home more festive. Window decorations can add a whole new dimension to the holiday charm.

Here are a few ideas to get you started:

Outdoor Wreaths

Buy a small wreath and wrap a ribbon around the top. When you close the top sash of the window on the ribbon, the wreath will hang in place. A simple wreath can give your home some holiday spirit. Even add pieces of citrus or a candle for a unique design. If you’re concerned the window won’t hold the ribbon, staple the ribbon to a piece of wood before you hang it out the window.

Line Up Some Ornaments

If you have leftover bulb ornaments from your tree, string a few together by attaching them to a ribbon. You can then display them outside your house. Hang them from your porch ceiling or from a window. Exposure to natural light will enable the ornaments to sparkle even more.

Hang Some Garland

Festive and aromatic, a fresh pine-and-cedar garland can spice up your kitchen for the holidays. If you have dried orange slices to spare, thread them into a citrus garland and hang them up to showcase your holiday spirit.

Create a Holiday Scene

Even if the view out your window is wintry, add some evergreen plants and DIY snowflakes. You can make snowflakes out of paper, doilies, or whatever you can think of and tape them to the window. Paper holiday stars, Christmas trees, ornaments, and just about any holiday symbol can set the mood. Even hang Christmas cards or holiday stockings in front of windows for a unique look.

Spruce Up the Windowsill

Decorating the sill is a great alternative to hanging stuff from the windows. There are many choices. You can perch pinecones and evergreen plants, or lay small branches on the sill. Even use spare bottles or vases to put in branches, candy canes, and other items associated with the holiday season. If your sill has room for a little Christmas tree or some toy reindeer, this can be great as well.

Put the Christmas Tree in Front of the Window

For most people, placing the tree where there’s room for one will suffice. Moving it over to the window adds charm inside and out. Passersby can see your twinkling Christmas tree in all its glory from outside at night. It can cheer things up when the daylight sun fades early.

Window Decals

You can decorate every inch of your home if you want. The windows are a great place; you can go the DIY approach or buy Christmas or winter themed stickers to put on your windows. It doesn’t matter where you live or how cold it is. You can create the scene you want. And never underestimate the charm of illuminated window decorations; acrylic snowflakes and stars can brighten up any home.
